"because of your generosity you are not monsters"
President Bush said this yesterday:
I'm sure I could go on and on about how about how $35 billion is less than four percent of the President's $933 billion. And I'd probably have a thing or two to say about what "less than four percent" really means in practice (perhaps by putting it in terms of drawing to an inside straight, or somesuch.) And there's no doubt I could dig through the budget (or articles about it) and play the old, "Look how much we're spending on X, Y, or Z!!" game. Like these guys did.
But I don't really want to do that. I just want to draw attention to that one word in the statement that makes my skin crawl: generosity.
Sorry, Mr. President. The word you're looking for there is "humanity." It's hard to believe that you and so many others don't understand that.
[I]t's important for our citizens to understand that we spend $35 billion a year for poor children's health care, through Medicaid -- $35 billion. So if you hear rhetoric out of Washington saying we're not taking care of poor children in America, they're just not reminding you of the fact that because of your generosity, we're spending $35 billion a year.

He uses "generosity" in the sense of "threw the bums a dime". Once you accept that stance, it all makes sense.
